(HOUSTON, TX)–The Houston school board says no more to offensive mascots.

Four Houston schools will have new mascots next school year. The motion passes 7 for with 0 against, and 1 abstention Thursday night, the school board approved a policy, banning offensive mascots at its schools. The move affects Lamar and Westbury high schools along with Welch and Hamilton Middle Schools.  Many in the community say the names are outdated, racist, and offensive.

“Because our legacy is your legacy, and using American Indian names and symbols for a sports team is dehumanizing and blatant racism.”

Others argued the mascots are part of a tradition, and meant to honor Native Americans.

“Once you take the Redskin word out of it, you divide the student body.” There will no longer be the exact same Lamar high school as there once was.”
