(HOUSTON) — As summer approaches, the Houston Fire Department is warning parents to be more mindful of their children’s safety, especially when it comes to hot cars.

Hot cars are one of the biggest problems parents with young children face every year. The temperature outside might only be in the 80′s, but inside the car the mercury can rise to more than 100 degrees within minutes.

HFD Cpt. Ruy Lozano says parents need to create a reminder that their child is in the back seat.

Listen to NEWS 92 FM’s Steve Ottesen report on this summer danger:

“A child left within a hot car over 100 degrees can within 10 minutes have some damage done neurologically that is unrepairable,” Lozano said.

And Lozano says make sure you look before you lock. Forty-four children died after being left in hot cars in the U.S. last year.

“Put a reminder on the rear view mirror, maybe a toy up front, or keep your purse, wallet and cell phone in the back sat with your child,” he said.
