The kind of music you like may say something about your personality, according to a new study from researchers at the University of Cambridge.

They had more than 4,000 people fill out personality surveys and then listen to 50 songs from all different genres of music and rate the songs based on what they liked.

What they found was that people who are “empathizers” — meaning empathetic people — were more likely to prefer mellower, emotionally-driven music, like soft rock, R&B, soul and adult contemporary, while “systemizers” — meaning more analytical people — favored more intense and high-energy music with greater complexity, like hard rock, heavy metal and punk.
