In case you’re completely out of the loop, today is a holiday of sorts for cannabis enthusiasts worldwide. While much of 4/20’s origin is unknown and debatable, everything from recipes containing marijuana to smoking videos can be found plastered around the Internet on said day.
So, it’s only right that Snapchat (the social media app of the moment) joined in on the fun by creating a filter specifically for the joyous occasion. Well, that’s where things get really messy and borderline racist.
Apparently, the graphics team at Snapchat thought that it would be a great idea to create a Bob Marley filter where users can emulate the late reggae artist – literally. When the filter is applied users are able to sport Marley’s signature dreads, a mustache, and his brown skin; which pretty much amounts to digital blackface.
The Twitterverse erupted into a frenzy after word spread about the controversial filter:
While, Bob Marley is known for being an avid weed smoker his legacy extends far beyond that. From social activism to being an icon in his native land of Jamaica, Marley touched thousands with his music.
Beauties, what do you think of the Snapchat filter? Is it offensive or celebratory?
