KATY — The Yates Lions are Austin-bound for the second straight season.

Before a standing-room-only crowd at the Merrell Center, the Lions won their 56th consecutive game, defeating La Marque 101-83 on Saturday to claim the Class 4A Region III championship for the second time in a row.

The No. 1 Lions (32-0) also surpassed the 100-point mark for the 14th consecutive game, tying the national record held by Hobbs (N.M.).

Yates will play in the Class 4A state semifinals on Thursday at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin. They will learn their opponent on Sunday.

Brandon Peters led the Lions effort with 33 points, five rebounds and four steals.

La Marque, the District 24-4A champs and No. 3 team in the state, ends at 34-3.
