HOUSTON—Houston drivers are used to highway hazards, but the obstacle on the East Freeway feeder road Thursday morning was a little out of the ordinary.

Around 2:30 a.m., a 10-foot alligator wandered onto the road and refused to move.

Several police officers responded and attempted to get the gator out of the way, but they were unsuccessful.

Eventually, the game warden was called out and had to put the animal down.

Officials said the meat will be donated to shelters.

Police said the gator was probably looking for water.
