Kelly Rowland is revealing a lot of hardship in her new single, “Dirty Laundry,” including her decades-old struggle with living in Beyonce’s shadows and the startling fact she is a survivor of domestic abuse at the hands of her then-boyfriend. In the song, Kelendria reveals, among other things:

  • A former boyfriend was physically abusive (“Meanwhile this nigga putting his hands on me…)
  • That same boyfriend was also verbally abusive (“He pulled me out, he said, “Don’t nobody love you but me…Not your mama, not your daddy and especially not Bey.”)
  • She was envious of Beyonce’s career (“When my sister was on the stage killin’ it… I was enraged”)
  • She’s dealt with a lot of anger (“I was mad at everybody, I mean everybody…”)

Some people–including members of the Madd Hatta Morning Show on sister station 97.9 The Box– wonder if this song might define the rest of Kelly’s career.  Her struggles are so deep and real in this single, it’s hard to think of it as just another song but the anthem of a domestic abuse survivor. It is also raw with emotion as she copes lyrically with her career aspirations and disappointments living in Beyonce’s shadow.
