According to ABC News,

On the five-year anniversary of the $787 billion stimulus President Obama signed into law soon after taking office, the White House said Monday (February 17th) in a status report that the spending bill boosted the economy and helped avoid another Great Depression. White House economic adviser Jason Furman said the stimulus saved or created an average of 1.6 million jobs a year for four years through the end of 2012, and will have a positive effect on long-run growth, boost the economy’s potential output and ultimately offset much of its cost. Republicans dismissed the White House’s report, however, with House Speaker John Boehner saying in a statement, “The ‘stimulus’ has turned out to be a classic case of big promises and big spending with little results. Five years and hundreds of billions of dollars later, millions of families are still asking, ‘Where are the jobs?'”

I think that the similes helped us from getting in a deeper hole than what we were already in.  And if the POTUS did nothing, then the other side would be saying that he did it on purpose because he wanted to see this country fail.
