John Mitchell Jr. of Richmond, Virginia built a reputation in publishing as the first editor of the weekly newspaper, The Richmond Planet. Mitchell used his voice within the paper to fight against lynchings in Virginia, gaining the nickname the “Fighting Negro Editor.”
