Mexico’s President Felipe Calderon wrapped up his visit to Houston meeting with members of the Mexican American community at Ripley house on the city east end.
Among those in attendance was Bolivar Fraga who runs Ripley House. He said President Calderon defended starting the war against Mexico’s drug cartels. Fraga said “he talked about the importance that he just couldn’t let the situation go on because the drug cartels were ever more gaining ground. He had a put a stop to it. “
“You are probably aware that one of the criticisms of his presidency has been that he started this war against the drug cartels,” Fraga added. “He indicated that it was about time that we did something.”
Earlier this month Calderon was in Washington D.C. and President Obama met with Calderon and praised him for his courage to stand up to his country’s drug cartels. President Obama says the U.S. has sped up the delivery of equipment and assistance to support those efforts.
Since Calderon came into office in 2006 almost 50-thousand people have been killed in drug related violence in Mexico. President Caderon’s term in office ends in December. It is not clear if his successor will be as aggressive in prosecuting the war against Mexico’s vicious drug cartels.
