According to reports, the Houston Independent Schools Superintendent Terry Grier has approved a two percent raise for all HISD teachers beginning next school year. According to Grier, with the limited funds due to state budget cuts, he believes the pay raises will help in luring newer teachers to the district.

The district plans to pay for part of the $20 million raise package by taking the money for the raises from its savings account. Starting pay for first-year teachers would rise to $45,887, which is an increase of $900. Administrative personnel such as principals, deans and assistant principals would also get a two percent pay increase under Grier’s proposal.

Higher-level central office staff would also receive raises of 1.75 percent. HISD personnel that work in the central office, bus drivers and hourly food services employees would receive the largest increases in pay; they would make 2.25 percent more. The HISD school board is scheduled to vote on the proposed plan on June 21.
