Authorities are cracking down on businesses that sell ingredients that could be used to make the synthetic drug known as bath salts. In recent weeks in our area, there have been deaths and overdoses from people who apparently took the drug. Friendswood is one location where someone has died. Last year, the Drug Enforcement Agency implemented an emergency ban on three of the chemicals. But the bottom line is that even though some of the ingredients have been banned, they’re still easy to purchase. That’s what undercover officers found out weeks ago when they went into local smoke shops.

Thursday, police departments with Friendswood, Houston and Webster launched simultaneous raids on smoke shops in southeast Houston and Harris County. Ten people were arrested and each charged with possession of a controlled substance. That charge carries the same weight as a possession of cocaine charge. Officers also seized more than $28,000 in cash and thousands of dollars in products.
