When HISD students head back to class next week, many of them will do so with upgraded security. The state of Texas’ largest school district is upgrading its surveillance camera systems on at least 400 school buses ensuring the safety and well being of both students and bus drivers.

The state of the art surveillance systems will be able to track the moves of students and bus drivers.

The upgraded system will allow HISD to record the entire ride bus ride in digital color with audio. The cameras are even equipped with night vision.

So if an incident occurs on a bus equipped with the new camera system and there are several accounts of that incident, officials with the district will be able to survey and view footage taken from the surveillance cameras to make accurate determinations and discuss as well as implement further courses of action.

With only several hundred buses equipped with the upgraded camera system, HISD expects to out fit their entire fleet of buses with the new seven-camera system by 2013.

HISD’s bus fleet was the only school district fleet in the entire country named to Fleet Magazine’s “Top 100 Fleet.”
