As News 92 FM approaches it’s first anniversary, Radio One Chairperson and Founder Catherine L. Hughes made a stop in Houston. She’s in town to be the keynote speaker for the national association of health services executives 27th annual educational conference today at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Downtown Houston.

News 92 FM Maria Todd sat down with her to talk about the creation of this station.

Catherine l. Hughes is a force of nature. Dynamic and charismatic, she has a clear vision of the past and the future and speaks frankly about both.

News 92 FM is the physical incarnation of a lifelong dream of hers.

Hughes says she began visualizing her radio career as a child.

Under her leadership and that of her son Alfred C. Liggins III, radio one has 53 stations programming hip-hop, R&B and gospel in 15 markets across the nation, but Hughes never lost sight of her news dream. She explains why Houston was chosen as the city to launch radio one’s first all-news station.

She says News 92 FM is the realization of her first love thanks in part to some divine intervention.

Driven as she is, Hughes does make time to give back to the community through charity work. In her down time she loves fishing because she can cook what she catches and has a great appreciation for ice cream. Her favorite confection? The classic banana split.

I hope you enjoyed getting to know a bit about our station’s founder. I know I did.
