HOUSTON (AP) — Police say a man was fatally shot and an officer wounded twice in a confrontation that began when the man was seen driving erratically.

They say the motorist was spotted shortly before midnight Sunday weaving through traffic and later driving slowly with the driver’s side door open in north Houston.

As the vehicle came to a stop on a dead-end road an officer identified as W. Fikes approached and ordered him to exit the car. Police say the motorist opened fire and shot Fikes once in each arm. Fikes’ partner returned fire, killing the man.

The identities of the motorist and the officer who shot him have not been released.

Fikes was being treated Monday for his injuries, which are not considered life-threatening.
