The City of Houston activates its heat emergency plan because of the extreme temperatures. Kathy Barton with the City’s Department of Health and Human Services says they activate the emergency plan where there’s a heat index of 108 for two consecutive days.
Barton says a phone call is not enough. They encourage people to go over to their elderly neighbor’s home to make sure they’re running their air conditioner. The city has five multi-service centers as well as libraries and recreation centers available to people who don’t have access to air-conditioning.
