Four Houston schools will have new mascots next school year. The motion passes 7-to-0 against and one abstention Thursday night, and the school board approved a policy banning offensive mascots at it’s schools. The move effects  Lamar and Westbury High Schools along with Welch and Hamilton Middle Schools.

Many in the community say the names are outdated, racist, and offensive, and using American Indian names and symbols for a sports team is dehumanizing and blatant racism. Others argued the mascots are part of a tradition, and meant to honor Native Americans.
