Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius says the decision by state of Texas not to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act has turned out to be very costly.

Sebelius says “every day that Texas doesn’t take up that offer from the federal government they lose 18-million dollars a day that would come into this state to pay for the cost of the uninsured.”

Sebelius says there are 5-million uninsured people in Texas, and about 2 and a half million of them could be covered if  Texas expanded its medicaid program.

She says “of that 5 million, about half of them would be qualified for Medicaid expansion, which isn’t an option available at all right now.”

Texas Governor Rick Perry says the federal funds come with too many strings attached.
