(HOUSTON) — Initiatives to end chronic homelessness in Houston are having a positive effect.
Mayor Annise Parker says coordinating agencies that deal with this population has helped get them off the street for good.
“We had a fragmented system where each agency was responsible for their own placements and individuals could easily get lost in the cracks,” Parker said.
A new online reservations system that the mayor compares to a travel site went online this week. It will be used to coordinate permanent housing and services specifically targeted to the needs of individuals identified as chronically homeless.
The number of chronically homeless has decreased by fifty percent over the last two years with the initiatives in place.
