Queen Latifah is about tho take on another great role for the big screen. According to the Hollywood Reporter The Queen will play 1920’s Blues great Bessie Smith that will air on HBO. Thinking back on her great performance in the musical Chicago, I know she’s gonna knock the ball out the park.
So who is Bessie Smith, well she’s known as the Empress of the Blues who was very popular in the 20’s and 30’s. She battled alcoholism and The Great Depression during her short but very impressive career. Smith Died in an auto accident in 1937.
The biopic will be directed by Dee Rees, whose former work includes the 2011 film Pariah. No word yet on when the film is expected to air.
