When Atari became the dominant gaming creator in the 80’s, Lawson designed games for them after starting his own company. Lawson was not a fan of modern video games because of their violence. He thought games should be used as teaching tools.

Right before his death in in April 2011 from complications of diabetes, Lawson was honored by the International Game Developers Association.

He is survived by his wife Catherine, and two children, Karen and Marc.
