(HOUSTON)– It’s just about time for Houston to be decorated with pink ribbons again.
The Susan G. Komen foundation has kicked off registration for its annual Race for the Cure.
Kristen Barley was 34-years-old when she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. Like many victims of the disease, she thought it was a curse at first.
Barley found she wasn’t alone. She had 40,000 sisters with a similar experience.
Although anyone can get breast cancer, Carmela Ledet knows that it often runs in the family.
“My mother at age 84 was diagnosed. I have a sister-in-law, I have aunts,” Ledet said. “So it’s prevalent in the family.”
Ledet has survived her battle with breast cancer for 21 years.
She encourages all women to get their yearly mammograms because early detection is the key to survival.
The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure takes place Oct. 4.
