(SUGAR LAND, TX) — Just last week, a transgender girl in Colorado made headlines for becoming her high school’s homecoming queen. But at the same time, a high school in Sugar Land crowned a transgender boy its homecoming king.

Mel Gonzales reacted to his crowning as Stephen F. Austin High School‘s Homecoming King like just about any other boy honored that way.

“I’m humbled and honored,” he said.

But Gonzales is a unique homecoming king.

“I’m a transgender male,” he said.

Gonzales was born biologically female, but always identified as male.

“I did begin socially transitioning first before I physically transitioned,” Gonzeles said. “I came out to my parents and friends who were both extremely supportive and loving.”

Gonzales says transition was a struggle but that it was easier than others, because he had that support.

And while he’s aware some people don’t support him as homecoming king, he’s got a lot of friends who do.

“Even the people who have very strong opinions against, they don’t express it as frequently as people who do defend me because they know that I have that support system,” he said.
