Who hosts the longest-running show in the history of cable television? Most people probably don’t know the answer, but it’s Dr. Bobby Jones of Dr. Bobby Jones Gospel on BET. The show has aired for 34 seasons and  airs in 62 countries. How did he make it happen?

“Nothing but blessings from the Lord and good talents, good music and appealing to what people need,” says Jones. “You can only stay around if they need you. I’m so excited to be around this long and bring these artists to the forefront, not just gospel but mainstream artists.”

This year marks one accomplishment that Jones hasn’t had happen in his 34 year history – surprisingly, he’s never had the Winans family on until this season. Now that he has, that leaves no one in the gospel music industry, past or present that hasn’t appeared on his show.

The 34th season kicks off with Kirk Franklin as co-host. The two joke that Jones is his father (spiritual father, for sure) but that Jones didn’t want to tell anyone he had short children. Cue the ba-dump-bump.

But that kind of homespun humor and knowledge of his faith-based audience is what has helped Jones endure.

Bobby Jones Gospel airs on Sunday at 9 a.m.
