Yesterday morning, in the complex of the Dr. Martin Luther King apartments and townhouses in east Detroit, MI, sheriffs discovered that 35-year-old mother of four, Mitchelle Blair had two of her children (Stoni and Stephen) and frozen and “stuffed inside [the] freezer” of her refrigerator, which was near the front door. Blair was found at a neighboring apartment. When she was arrested and taken into custody, Blair confessed to having killed her both of offspring back in 2012. Whoa.
It’s being reported that Blair admitted she killed 9-year-old Stephen Berry (who would be 11) and 13-year-old Stoni Blair (who would be 15) after she discovered they had been molesting a young relative, two police sources familiar with the case said Wednesday. However, Blair’s family members don’t believe this for a second and say that Blair was always begging for help, food and money. When her great-aunt Angela Gordon told her she needed to get a job, Blair cut the entire family off and they never heard from her again.
Wayne County sheriffs found the grisly secret while issuing an eviction notice for Blair. At the police station, Blair said she had strangled her son Stephen to death in May of 2012 and nine months later killed his sister Stoney. Her two other children (an 8-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl) are currently under the care of their great-aunt Gordon.
Neighbors had noticed the children hadn’t been seen and Blair said she told everyone that they were being home-schooled. Neighbors say the mother would always talk about her kids but they were rarely seen. Everyone in the neighborhood claims that Blair was always very nice. In fact, she was known as “Angel,” which is a far departure of what was found in her apartment.
“When they were taking her stuff outside from the backyard, like the freezer had the blood on it,” said neighbor Coretta Marion. “We were all outside watching it, but it was sad.”
“She was a nice lady, always spoke to everybody,” said Jessica, one of the woman’s neighbors. “She was always nice with the kids, she kept her kids to herself.” Known as “overprotective,” Blair would often gush over how much she loves her kids on Facebook.
Ryan Bridges, a spokesman for the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office, said in an email that autopsies were tentatively scheduled for Thursday, “as the bodies are still frozen.” Sources said it appears the boy died of strangulation and the girl from blunt-force trauma.
Wayne County prosecutors charged Blair on Wednesday with four counts of first-degree child abuse, a 15-year felony; and one count of committing child abuse first-degree in the presence of another child, a felony punishable by up to life in prison. Blair has been arraigned at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in 36th District Court.
