Military records show that the U.S.C.T. lost four soldiers, and only one white commanding officer at Appomattox during the entire Virginia campaign.
Sgt. Maj. William McCeslin famously wrote of the battle’s end: “We, the colored soldiers, have fairly won our rights by loyalty and bravery – shall we obtain them? If we are refused now, we shall demand them.”
The Battle of Appomattox led to the parole of 39 slaves and free Blacks from the Appomattox Court House.
