Dear Tom,

My sister and Ms. Luckey have been friends for a long time. She has such a very sweet and kind spirit, that when we met – I felt as if I had known her forever.

Not only is she a super grandmother, but a breast cancer survivor!  Back in 1996, she went in for a checkup and they found a lump.  She was diagnosed with stage four-breast cancer.  The following week, she underwent a mastectomy.

We met last month at the funeral of her 28-year-old daughter, Claudia – who had just moved up from Atlanta.  Unfortunately, she was killed outside a club on the south side…but thanks to surveillance footage, an anonymous tip and a regional manhunt, the killer – Derek nelson wells – was captured in Iowa and is locked up behind bars awaiting trial without bail for first degree murder.

She is heartbroken & sad about her daughter and the fact that her 3 grandchildren (5 year-old Mariah and the 2-year-old twins named heaven & Nevaeh) have been left without a mother.  She has filed filing for legal guardianship and is looking forward to her court date on December 2nd.

Ms. Luckey manages a little café in Morgan Park, and with those earnings, she will have to provide for her 3 girls as a single mom.  I pray that some of her burdens can be lifted.  These babies are from Atlanta and this will be their first Chicago winter.  Can you help her “winterize” them?
