The latest publication to capitalize off the #OscarsSoWhite controversy is Variety Magazine.

With the caption, “Tomorrow’s cover on Diversity crisis will be a must read. As the cover line states, we are all to blame. Let’s act,” the publication’s Co-Editor-In-Chief, Claudia Eller teased a photo of an Oscar statue that was white instead of gold. The cover has gone viral and we wonder if that was the sole purpose—to make headlines instead of making a difference.

They say everything happens for a reason and maybe the most fortunate and productive thing to come from no Black actors being nominated for an Oscar this year…or last year…is a change in the rules.

The Academy’s president, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, recently announced that membership into the prestigious organization has to be renewed every ten years. In addition, three more governor seats will be added to the board, which will most likely be occupied by people of color.

Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith, Spike Lee and Al Sharpton have vowed to protest this year’s ceremony and even George Clooney has publicly stated that the nominations seemed to me more diverse ten years ago than they are today.

While the fight for inclusion is ongoing and continuous media attention about the issue is important so it’s not forgotten about within the “24 Hour Kardashian News Cycle”; is there a point where reports on #OscarsSoWhite becomes exploitive?

What more can Variety say that hasn’t already been said about the issue? It’s not as if the votes can be recalled and the Academy can start the process all over again. At this point, we’re literally crying over spilled milk…spilled white milk that is.

The next person we’re patiently waiting to hear from about #OscarsSoWhite controversy is Chris Rock when he hosts the Academy Awards on February 28th.
