If you’ve ever taken a month or two off of working out, you know how awful it is getting back in shape. Well, according to Time

A new small study finall reveals why– muscle memory is gone after about two months without exercise. Study authors found after participants stopped exercising for nine months genetic changes caused by exercise could no longer be detected. When some of the participants began exercising again after taking the break, researchers found their muscles appeared virtually the same as a newly-trained muscle would– meaning there was no substantial amount of muscle memory retained. Study author Maléne Lindholm says, “The study could be used as positive encouragement. It’s never too late to start training from a muscle perspective.”

That’s interesting and good to know.
