Barack and Michelle Obama launched their inaugural Obama Foundation Summit yesterday (October 31st) in Chicago, with the former president calling it “an experiment in us trying to have a collective conversation.”
The programs and goals for the Obama Foundation are still taking shape, but there will be a focus on helping nurture and develop young activists and leaders of the future. However, Obama said their ambitions aren’t about politics, stating,
“Our goal here is not to create a political movement. Some of you may be aspiring to be politicians and I believe firmly in politics. But I also believe that the moment we’re in right now, politics is the tail and not the dog. What we need to do is think about our civic culture.”
The two-day summit with about 500 attendees is the first of what is expected to be an annual event. Speakers this year will include Mrs. Obama, Britain’s Prince Harry, and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. We miss them in office.
