Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade are sharing their journey to becoming parents with Oprah Winfrey. In an interview set to air December 8thon OWN, the pair will discuss the experiences they’ve had on the way to (and since) welcoming daughter Kaavia James via surrogate on November 7th.
“You’re finally a mother at 46,” Oprah says in an all-new special, Oprah at Home with Gabrielle Union, Dwyane Wade & Their New Baby.
Beaming, Union says, “Yeah.”
TOUGH QUESTIONS
It hasn’t all been joyful, however. Union says that after they shared their news, several people questioned by they announced her arrival alongside a photo of her resting in a hospital bed with her husband. “Everyone started talking about why she acting like she just had a baby,” Wade, 36, shares.
“You want to explain that?” Oprah asked Union, whose face was filled with emotion.
“I’m already getting choked up. It’s still hard to let go,” the actress added in the clip, in reference to the fact that she wasn’t able to carry the child herself.
INFERTILITY
Union has famously struggled with infertility. In her 2017 memoir We’re Going To Need More Wine, she shared that she has been through “eight or nine” miscarriages.
“For three years, my body has been a prisoner of trying to get pregnant — I’ve either been about to go into an IVF cycle, in the middle of an IVF cycle or coming out of an IVF cycle,” wrote Union.

- Kaavia is Union’s first child. Wade is father to sons Xavier Zechariah, 5, Zion Malachi Airamis, 11, and Zaire Blessing Dwyane, 16. He also raises nephew Dahveon Morris, 17.
