consumer-alertThe Better Business Bureau is warning that students looking to get their high school diploma online run the risk of wasting time and money on a scam.

Monica Russo with the Houston BBB says the only legitimate home school programs they have seen are where the parents or guardians are involved as the teachers.  She says sometimes online diplomas aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on.

“Colleges don’t accept them, employers don’t accept them, and students don’t find this out until after they’ve paid their money,” she warns.

One of the red flags of a high school diploma scam is the claim that there is very little to no work involved.

“A lot of times all you have to do is take a test and, ‘oh wow, I’m going to get a diploma.’  If you see something like that it’s probably not a legitimate offer,” Russo says.

During an undercover investigation, Russo adds, a child in elementary school passed the test, and in another instance a diploma was issued to a dog.  She says there are great GED programs available and you can research them at bbbhouston.org.
