The White House announced Tuesday (November 22nd) that President Obama had commuted the sentences of 79 more federal inmates. He has now commuted the sentences of more than 1,000 people, topping the past 11 presidents combined, the vast majority of them convicted of non-violent drug offenses. Of that number, 839 had their sentences commuted this year. White House counsel Neil Eggleston said yesterday that the president will likely to grant more commutations in his last two months in office.
