HOUSTON—Colleges and universities have become sympathetic to students’ concerns about the high cost of mandatory text books. As a result, major institutions in Houston now offer programs for students to rent textbooks instead of buy them.
The colleges that allow renting include: Houston Community College, Rice University, Texas Southern University and the University of Houston.
In addition there are several web sites where students can purchase textbooks new or used at a fraction of the costs found at on-campus bookstores. A couple of the sites allow students to resell their books after they are finished using them. One student at the University of Houston said she recently bought a $130 math analysis book for $75 on Amazon.com. She has already resold the book on Amazon for $75, which actually means the book cost her nothing.
