With renters making up nearly half of Houston’s population, it’s important for tenants to know what their renters’ rights are.

There are more than 500,000 apartments in the Houston area and every year the Houston Apartment Association deals with at least 10,000 complaints.

Llyod Joshua Sams said he’s had a hole in his bathroom door since he moved in and roaches have infested his kitchen. But after numerous complaints to his apartment’s manager over the course of a year, nothing has yet to be done.

“These people are getting a lot of money from us every month, and if we’re late, they’re demanding their money,” Sams said. “But if they’ve made mistakes or haven’t fixed a problem, what are we to do?”

With about 1 million renters in Houston, Sams is far from alone.
