Food banks, an indispensible source of aid all year around, are hurting badly as the holidays approach. In fact, they’re hurting so badly that a big benefit is in the works for this weekend in Montgomery, about an hour north of Houston.

Volunteers there are building up to a first-of-its-kind fundraiser, a benefit for the Montgomery County Food Bank, which is hurting almost as badly as the people it helps.

“I think it’s a sign of the times,” said Doris Golemon with the Montgomery County Food Bank.

Just as a bank running out of money is a crisis, a food bank running out of groceries is hard to imagine. The Montgomery County Food Bank served a record 31,000 people last month, but it’s not the only facility running into the same problem.

“We’re not meeting the demand,” said Brian Greene with the Houston Food Bank. “That is our fundamental problem. In some counties we’re actually doing worse, frankly, than we are in others.”
