If you can’t make it to Washington for the dedication of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, you can still participate in making history.

The D.C. Public Library is partnering with YouTube so that people can share their stories about how the late civil rights leader has impacted their lives. Go to the library’s site, click on the “Upload Your Story” button, log in to your YouTube account, and follow the instructions to upload your story.

The stories, which will be collected from Monday, Aug. 22 through Wednesday, Aug. 31, will be reviewed by library staff then posted on its page, along with other submissions.

In addition to posting a message on YouTube, contributors can:

• Record a video message (in three minutes or less) describing a memory of King or a description of how King’s message of non-violence impacted their lives.

• Write a blog post about how King has impacted your life. Tweet a link to your post and tag it with #KingStories.

• If you are in town for the festivities, you can still contribute. Visit the memorial, take a photo of yourself and upload the photo using Twitpic or any other photo sharing application using the #KingStories hash tag, or visit the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library at 9th and F Streets NW in downtown Washington, to record a video message using the library webcam station.

For more information and for tickets to events leading up to the dedication of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, visit www.dedicatethedream.org or call (888) 484-3373. The memorial is located at the intersection of West Basin Drive SW and Independence Avenue SW.
