In a meeting Thursday, the HISD Board voted for a reduction in its workforce. That reduction translates into the laying off over 60 teachers, 26 of whom teach special education. The district reportedly said that those teachers could be hired back next year as more positions become available through the retiring or resignation of teachers. The move is being described as the greatest budget cut to education by the Texas Legislature since World War II. Additional reports indicate that the lay offs mean a $122 million fund reduction over a two-year period which lead to 720 HISD teachers being let go for the current school year. Teachers whose jobs are eliminated are able to apply for available classroom positions within HISD.

In another vote, HISD also decided to close Kaleidoscope Charter School. The school, which will be merged with Jane Long Middle School has approximately 100 students.

Another vote made from the HISD Board during Thursday’s meeting included deciding to revamp its school recess policy. The board voted to offer daily recess to in addition to physical education classes.

Texas law requires elementary school students to get 135 minutes of physical activity a week. That physical activity must come in the form of PE or recess.
