Veterans’ Administration is adding another 1900 mental health staffers to VA medical centers nationwide to keep up with the increasing demand for help as veterans head home from war-time service.

Dr. Laura Marsh is the chief of psychiatry at the Michael Debakey VA medical center and she says she’ll be adding about twenty new staffers here in Houston to meet increasing demand. She says they treat a variety of mental health problems, with depression at the top of the list.

Dr. Marsh says the biggest hurdle her staff faces is convincing vets to seek mental health care.  It’s unfortunate, she says, since most who do get help say they wish they’d sought medical care a long time ago.
