Iconic rocker and musician Phil Collins was in town Wednesday promoting his new book titled, The Alamo and Beyond: A Collector’s Journey. Collins, who was named an honorary admiral in the Texas Navy, has won an Academy Award, seven Grammys and two Golden Globes.

Collins spent time in Houston at a private reception located on Lamar, hosted by Torch Energy Advisors and sponsored by the Texas State Historical Association and McMurry University. A portion of the proceeds raised from the event benefited TSHA. Tickets were reportedly $395.

Within Collins’ book, he recounts moments that were poignant and profound. The book details for example, an ex-wife who bought him a saddle and bridle receipt for John W. Smith. During the Alamo siege, Smith was given a bundle of letters written by the Alamo defenders to give to their families. One of the letters in the bundle was from William Barret Travis to Sam Houston seeking aid and reinforcements.

Collins’ collection includes many historical Texas artifacts, some of which include: Sam Houston’s Bowie knife, Crockett’s signed autobiography, and a sword Collins says was used by James Butler Bonham at the Alamo. The book also features photography that allows readers to consider  and come to understand the various weapons, tools, and personal items better than they could under glass.
