Centerpoint energy staged a demonstration Wednesday morning to show just how dangerous power lines can be especially as we are now in hurricane season.

David Baker with Centerpoint cautions everyone to assume all power lines, even those that are downed, are live and have a current. If the lines are in water, avoid the water as well. Even if the line is touching a wooden fence, don’t touch the fence because it can conduct electricity and you could be electrocuted.

Baker also suggests turning off and unplugging the air conditioner and the refrigerator during a power outage. Just remember to plug it back in when power is restored. Surge protectors are a good option to protect big screen TVs and computers.

After Hurricane Ike, 2.1 of 2.2 million Centerpoint customers were without power. Centerpoint has mutual aid agreements with many other agencies. Following Ike, 15,000 workers came from as far away as Canada to help.

When it comes to personal home generators, Baker says to make sure they are properly installed otherwise it could cause a feedback to Centerpoint’s lines.
