A federal judge has denied the state of Texas a stay of injunction that blocks enforcement of parts of the state’s new voter registration laws.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott had asked U.S. District Judge Gregg Costa to put his ruling on hold until a higher court hears an appeal, but the Galveston judge rejected that request on Tuesday.

Earlier this month, Costa struck down five provisions of the new Texas voter registration law that a national group called voting for America says make it impossible to conduct vote registration drives. The group and two Galveston residents sued saying the new law unconstitutionally restricts voter registration drives and limits who can hand out voter registration cards and who can collect the completed registration forms.
