A 4-year-old remains in critical condition after accidentally shooting himself in the head.

Emergency crews were called to the Colonial Arms Apartments off Laura Koppe near Highway 59 around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday night.

The child’s father tells us the gun was in a nightstand and that the child was only unsupervised for a very short time. He repeated over and over that it was an accident as he got into a vehicle to go to the hospital.

Police say the 4-year-old and a 2-year-old were in a room when the child apparently discovered the gun. The parents were apparently in a different room of the small apartment.

“I see him all the time, riding on the bike, a little happy kid,” says neighbor Keisha Horne, “I was in the kitchen cleaning up. I heard something go pow like that.”
Neighbor Chris Powers who looked out the door said, “We seen the grandfather holding the baby.”  Powers added, “I hope he makes it. I hope he’ll be alright.”
At this time, no charges have been filed.
