Heavy hearts on the campus of Texas A&M and here in Houston this morning after a devastating wreck claims the lives of two Aggie freshmen and sends a third to a Houston hospital. NEWS 92 FM’s Pattie Shieh joins us live with what happened.

It was a weekend trip home for the 18-year-old members of A&M’s Corp of Cadets. The trio was in Houston to judge a Junior ROTC drill competition at Westside High School. It was 3:30 a.m. Sunday morning, they were done and heading back to College Station but didn’t make it past Waller.

That’s when a Ford Mustang heading in the wrong direction on 290 barreled into them head on. The massive impact sent their SUV onto the shoulder where it burst into flames.

Amy Pacheco, the driver of the SUV, and Miguel Hernandez, who was in the back seat, were trapped by the fire and killed. Francisco Campos was in the front seat. He managed to get out and remains at Memorial Hermann Hospital. Pacheco and Campos both graduated from Cesar Chavez High School. Hernandez graduated from Northbrook High School.

The driver of the Mustang, 21-year-old Katie Thomas, also died at the scene.

Reports indicate beer bottles may have been found in her vehicle and authorities are still looking into whether alcohol could have been a factor.

At 10:30 p.m. tonight on the A&M campus, echo taps will be played on the quad to honor Pacheo, who was a construction science major, and Hernandez, who was majoring in general studies.
