HOUSTON – If you’re doing some spring cleaning, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office has just the thing for you: document shredding. The county has teamed up with Shred-It to help citizens permanently destroy old or unwanted personal documents.

To take advantage of this free service, take old documents to 7900 Will Clayton Pkwy. in north Harris County on Saturday, March 23, 2013 from 9 a.m. to noon at the HCSO’s substation.

Residents may bring up to five regular size “banker” boxes per vehicle.

Identity theft has become one of the costliest crimes in the nation. In addition to helping prevent thieves from physically getting their hands on the discarded personal and confidential information of others, Shred-It also helps by heightening general public awareness on how to avoid becoming a victim of identity theft.
