Nearly ten years ago, scientists finished a map of the human genome, and it revolutionized the way breast cancer is researched and diagnosed. MD Anderson Oncologist Dr. Rachel Theriault says mapping the genome has made a real difference in how some breast cancers are treated.

Debilitating side effects like nausea, anemia, exhaustion, memory loss, hair loss and on and on may be eased or someday alleviated by these targeted treatments.

But will the growing understanding of the genetics behind cancer someday lead to cures or even prevent the disease that devastates so many?
