Strong winds pounded the Houston area overnight with heavy rains, impressive displays of lightning and thunder, strong winds, and hail.

One News 92 FM listener reported hail the size of golf balls in the La Marque area.

Hitchcock was one of the hardest hit areas.  Hail pounded the area for about 20 minutes, damaging roofs, homes,  and cars.  Several Hitchcock police cars were also severely damaged.

The heavy rains also caused street flooding, including some high water on I-45 at north Main.

It appears lightning started a fire at an apartment complex in Spring.  Residents say the entire building was shaking, and then the roof caught fire.  Several fire departments responded to the two-alarm blaze on I-45 and Pruitt road.  At least eight units were destroyed, and several others had smoke and water damage, however no injuries were reported.

In Marble Falls, golf ball size hail damaged more than a thousand vehicles and in Burnet County, the windows in two sheriff patrol cars were broken out.
