A face-off is shaping up at Houston City Hall between supporters and opponents of an LGBT-inclusive civil rights ordinance.  Council’s Quality of Life committee is preparing to take up the matter Wednesday.

The civil rights ordinance would offer protection on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, along with sex, race, color, ethnicity, age, and marital status.

And that’s what Pastor Dave Welch of the U.S. Pastor Council has a problem with.

“Why is this even necessary? [Mayor Annise Parker] has not provided any evidence of any problems,” Welch said. “It’s like shooting a cannonball at a fly.”

But, Human Rights Campaign member Lou Weaver says the LGBT community needs to be included.

“People are still discriminated against based on their religion, the color of their skin and on their LGBT status,” Weaver said. “Everybody should have equal rights. We shouldn’t have to have these lists but unfortunately that’s not the case.”

Both sides will rally before the 2 pm committee session.
