(HOUSTON) — Several inmates at the Harris County Jail are being offered a chance to earn an education before re-entering society.

The Latest News Headlines, Traffic and Weather:

The program is called Mentoring Moms. The goal is to give pregnant women who are currently inmates the chance to take a number of classes covering a range of subjects. Everything from parenting classes to computer skills courses are offered.

Jennifer Herring is the program manager of re-entry services. She says educational opportunities help prevent inmates from returning to jail.

“It’s going to give them some tools, some education, some knowledge that they can take out in the world to be better moms, to be better citizens and to have jobs,” Herring said. “They’re very excited, like we are.”
