(NEW CANEY, TX) Thieves are taking a new approach to identity theft in Montgomery County.

They’re not only creating real caller ID numbers, they’re also posing as police officers in a scam involving a government agency.

This is how the scam works:

  • The thief first claims to be with the Attorney General’s office, calling to collect on a government debt.
  • If the potential victim doesn’t go along with the scam, they are then threatened with arrest by a local police department.

What concerns Roman Forest Police Chief Steven Carlisle is the thieves ability to create real caller ID numbers of the agency’s they claim to represent.

Carlisle says what the identify thieves really want is your social security number. Any money they receive is secondary.
